About

My work and practice as an artist deals with the with the pictorial questions of painting through an assortment of objects surrounding my personal domestic life with ongoing themes of quiet space and stillness of “air” throughout. My relationship to still life, more specifically through the use of natural objects such as food or flowers and other household items within my vicinity, represents my everyday need to capture the little moments of life in physical form as they begin to change before my eyes. I paint from observation mainly to capture the freshness of color and environment. I use traditional materials such as oil paint and linen to connect my paintings to the long lineage of still life painting within art history, as well as inspiration from my strong traditional values I was instilled with growing up. I connect these ideas though the visual physical process of my set ups, object choice, as well as showcasing the painter’s hand within the paintings. My visual aim is to play around with color, texture, and placement of objects to draw attention to tranquil spaces where the still life objects have a place to interact and “converse” with viewers within the subtle controlled soft visual color palette and lighting situation I place them in.
